Eligibility Criteria for Admission to MBBS
The National Medical Commission sets the eligibility criteria for admission to MBBS in India. If a student is found ineligible at any stage of the MBBS admission process, their candidacy will be canceled.
Educational Qualifications
Candidates must have passed PUC / 12th class from an accredited board to get MBBS admission in India. Students wishing to study the MBBS course must compulsorily study physics, chemistry and biology in grades 11 and 12.
Candidates must have scored at least 50% marks in the qualifying examination for MBBS admission in India. Candidates for Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes and OBCs should have secured at least 40% marks for admission to MBBS. Candidates seeking admission to MBBS must be at least 17 years of age and a maximum of 25 years of age will be eligible to study for this course.
What does the MBBS access process look like?
Admission to the MBBS course is based on the marks obtained by the candidates in NEET, a national level entrance test. MBBS admission requires writing an All India Medical Entrance Examination NEET. The NTA conducts the Medical Entrance Examination based on the NEET-UG syllabus covering the CBSE syllabus 11th and 12th. MBBS admission aspirants are required to answer 180 multiple choice questions in 3 hours, according to the NEET exam model.
The NEET question paper is divided into three sections. Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The Neat Biology section is 90 questions below for 360 points. The remaining two sections are held to equal points. There are 45 questions and 180 marks each.

One of the first challenges that candidates face in getting MBBS admission is the NEET test. The National Testing Institute conducts the NEET test every year. NEET UG is a national level entrance test for admission to medical courses. This test is the criteria for getting a seat at reputed government / private medical colleges in India. Aims and ZipMar are also offered admission through NEET testing. A total of 542 colleges across the country are admitted through NEET examination.
The NTA’s screening process for MBBS access is very strict. Neatly based on merit in NEET exam. After the NEET result, the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) will conduct the next admission process for MBBS. The Medical Counseling Committee provides access to 15% MBBS seats to All India Quota, Deemed / Central Universities, Armed Forces Medical College and Employee State Insurance Corporation. The remaining 85% is sanctioned by the respective state counseling authorities.
NEET cutoff qualification
Candidates wishing to get MBBS admission must qualify for the cutoff in the NTA’s NEET Admission Test. The cutoff marks of the NEET exam for MBBS admission for general category candidates is 50 per cent. The cut-off for candidates in the reserved category is around 40 per cent. Only candidates who have cut-off marks and percentage are eligible for MBBS Admission Counseling.
What’s Next After Eligibility?
Candidates who are eligible for the NEET examination are eligible to participate in the Central and State Level and AIQ Counseling process for MBBS Admission. The National Testing Institute releases a list of NEET UG qualified candidates. Students on this list are eligible for NEET counseling. Students must register on the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) portal to participate in the counseling and seat sharing process.
The Counseling Committee gives access to 15% MBBS seats to All India Quota, Deemed / Central Universities, Armed Forces Medical College and Employee State Insurance Corporation. Counseling for MBBS admission requires students to register using their personal and NEET related details.
The candidate must pay the counseling fee and the student must fill his or her own course and college preferences. Candidates fill out the MCC seat allocation based on the NEAT All India Rank, Reservation and Seat Matrix. Candidates who are offered seats during MBBS admission seat allocation must report to the designated organization.
